🧪 Special casesHow to remove sticker, tape & adhesive residue
Oil or alcohol for the stickiness · no heat
When a price sticker, tape or name label goes through the wash still stuck to clothes, the paper crumbles away and only the sticky adhesive remains. This residue doesn't dissolve well in water and detergent, and it traps dirt, gradually turning into a grimy mark.
🔬 Why this order works
Sticker adhesive is a rubber or resin compound that dissolves easily in oil or alcohol. So treat it in two steps: dissolve and lift it off with cooking oil or cleansing oil, then wash out the leftover oil with dish soap. Applying heat melts the adhesive and spreads it deeper into the fibers.
🧺 Step by step
Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.
👕 By fabric
Oil → dish soap removes most of it. If a grimy dirt mark remains, treat it with oxygen bleach.
You can use rubbing alcohol or hand sanitizer gel instead of oil. Alcohol dissolves some dyes, so test on the inside first.
Oil easily leaves marks on silk and wool, so don't treat them at home; take them to a dry cleaner.
🚫 Don't
- Using the dryer or ironing — the adhesive melts and spreads even wider.
- Applying oil and washing as is — it leaves a new oil mark.
- Acetone on acetate clothing — it dissolves the fibers.
⏳ If it has already dried
For adhesive that has gone through the dryer and hardened flat, apply oil or alcohol and leave for 10 minutes or more to soften it thoroughly, then scrape it off. If it doesn't all come off at once, repeat the softening and scraping.
💡 Tip
When a little stickiness remains, repeatedly pressing on and peeling off a wide piece of tape transfers the adhesive to the tape. It's worth trying before you reach for oil.
❓ Common questions
A sticker in the washing machine stuck to several garments.
Before anything goes in the dryer, soften and remove it with oil one garment at a time, pre-treat with dish soap, then wash again. Wipe off any bits stuck inside the drum too.
What about the residue from a size sticker on the waistband of jeans?
Denim is tough, so after softening with oil or alcohol you can scrub it with a toothbrush. Then remove the oil with dish soap and wash.
An iron-on name label came off and left residue.
It's a heat-activated adhesive, so it comes off less easily than an ordinary sticker. Soften it with alcohol and scrape it off bit by bit; if it's on the inside where no one sees it, leaving it is also an option.

General home methods. For valuable garments or unknown fabrics, take them to a dry cleaner and say what the stain is. Follow product labels for bleaches and solvents, ventilate, and never mix them.
